Change Update
I’ve been moving some things around behind the scenes at Gardener of Life, and I figured I owed you a straight account of it rather than just letting you notice the schedule had changed.
Three months into this, I had enough real publishing under my belt to see what was working and what wasn’t. So I sat down and made some changes.
The biggest one: I dropped the Sunday Harvest Digest. It sounded good on paper — a weekly ledger, a tidy wrap-up of everything I’d written that week. But I’ve farmed long enough to know the difference between a task that earns its keep and one that just feels like it should. The Digest was the second kind. It didn’t add anything a reader couldn’t already get by just following along, and it was eating a morning I’d rather spend writing something that mattered. So it’s gone, not shelved.
I also cleaned up the republishing side of things. Substack and Medium used to land on different days with a Sunday recap tying it together. Now they both go out Thursday, off the same week’s Long View essay — but written separately, not copy-pasted. Substack gets a version close to the original. Medium gets a full rewrite for a reader who’s never heard of me. Same seed, two different plants, if you’ll let me stretch the metaphor.
Saturday’s become home for the SoloGardener Chronicles pieces — this kind of writing, the personal stuff, the stories. No fixed schedule; it shows up when there’s something worth telling, same as always. It just has a place to land now instead of getting swept into the old Digest.
There’s a LinkedIn piece coming too — a short hook drawn from Tuesday’s Long View, posted to my own profile. Not live yet. I want the rest of this settled before I add one more thing to the plate.
And the footers — the little sign-off at the bottom of each post — I’ve retired the old automated snippet system and I’m adding those by hand now. Slower, but it means I’m actually looking at each post one more time before it goes out, which isn’t the worst habit for a man to have.
None of this changes what I’m writing about or why. It’s just less machinery between the thinking and the page. That’s usually the direction worth moving in.
